I remember as a child, my parents did a lot of woodworking projects. I hated every minute of it, from going to the very boring and hot lumber store, to when they would fire up the power saws and start to work.

It was the loudness of them that bothered me the most, but I was also very afraid that they would hurt themselves with the power tools. That fear has carried with me as an adult. Seems I’m not alone.

I saw this picture over at Helpful Advice For Home Construction and I had to share it. The moral of the story is…BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN USING A NAIL GUN!!

I was helping my dad put together a stand for my mom’s Nefertiti bust she just bought. We were using brass screws, and he warned me not to go too fast with the drill, because the brass screws strip easily. Alas, I went too fast with the drill and stripped the screw. This is why my dad doesn’t let me help him very often.

He wasn’t very mad, though, like he usually would be. He told me to go over to his tool bench and get the Grabit drill bits. He then easily removed the screw and drilled a new screw right into place. If he had not had the Grabit screw remover, this could have taken a very long time.

So, if you have a tendency to strip screws like I do, check out the Grabit stripped screw removers. It would save you a ton of time!

Duct tape- Let me tell you, internets. You need duct tape. If you can’t fix it with duct tape, you can’t fix it. But try using more duct tape before you give up on fixing the item. More duct tape is always a good idea.

Pliers- Needle nose, wire cutting, small slip joint, and locking. Yes, you need all 4 kinds. When I was a kid, I fell in love with needle nose pliers and have loved them ever since. I like the little "snap, snap, snap" noise they make when you are opening and closing them. And I love how they can get into tight areas where you need some plier-action. Ah, needle nose pliers. I heart you.

Sorry about the pun, but there appears to be a very serious problem occurring in the states, so much so that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have got involved and are beginning to demand that more is to done about the growing trend for people who are carrying out home improvements, but instead of using the traditional hammer and nail, they are using the heavy duty nail guns that we see on the DIY shows and on building sites.

In fact the figures quoted by the CDC show that since 1991 the amount of nail gun related injuries has grown by over two hundred percent, with a massive 37,000 or more per year between the years 2001 and 2005, and yet with the same time frame, work related injuries for the same tool have remained the same, proving their point about the need for something to be done with the home improvement sector.

So why is there a rise in these injuries since 2001? The simple answer would have to be the availability of these tools, only in the past five years or so have the tools come down on price enough to make them affordable additions to the family home, yet these things are seriously dangerous and really do not have a place in the average home. The list of injuries are varied too, hands, feet and legs being struck by a nail fired by one of these guns.

Maybe there should government health warnings on tools of this nature, otherwise it could get out of control.

I’m not especially into tools and neither is my husband, unfortunately. So when construction was completed on our house, imagine my surprise at the fact that I was actually going to have to go into the garage and haul some tools inside to do some work on the house.

Needless to say, I’ve never used so many tools in all my life and the number one tool that I utilized the most was a drill. I kid you not, I drilled hole after hole hanging rods, bars, racks, shelves, art, pictures, and such and I must say, after all was said and hung, it was a great feeling to actually have Done It Myself.
