According to the bloggers at DIY & Decor, DIY is taking a backseat to the growing popularity of DFY – Done For You. Evidently, time constraints and extra cash are making it easier for folks to hire a tradesman (often through a home improvement store) to do those home improvement projects for you. With Spring around the corner and the fact that families will be outside participating in various activities, people just don’t want to take the time on weekends for DIY projects.
Another reason DFY is becoming more and more popular is the fact that some DIY projects are, quite frankly, done wrong. This is extremely devaluing to your home when completed projects don’t meet up to code or go downhill and look worse than before. It is important to remember that certified technicians must be brought in for certain projects and it is up to the homeowner to make sure that electrical, gas, plumbing etc. are done by the proper tradesmen.
For those of you go-getters, don’t worry, DIY is not dead; DIY & Decor says,
"DIY is not a dying pursuit – it’s just shifted from the traditional
plumbing, electrical and joinery jobs to the more creative &
decorative projects such as painting, soft-furnishing, wood working etc."
DIY has always been and always will be something that gives one a sense of pride upon completion of a home improvement project, but I must say the idea of paying a qualified tradesman to do these around the house tasks is much more desirable for someone like me (an inexperienced DIYer) that does not have the time or where-with-all to actually do it.
